Interesting Read on South Dakota License Plate History

Our Arizona Club Member, JW Hansen, saw an add on our web site from Jim Kendall, in "Nord Dakota", that had some SD 1932 plates for sale. (see For Sale tab)  The party selling them said they were from Spink County.  Well, JW having a mind like a rusty steel trap, didn't think that was right. So, he did some investigating and found a site that shows the progression of SD plate/county numbers over the years.  The site talks about the unincorporated counties within SD as well as giving a little history about each county.

Long, strange trip to a name for the club

During the second meeting of the club, in February 1988, the membership voted to name the club Central South Dakota Street Rods.  The name was chosen by written ballot from several presented.  The following meeting, in March 1988, apparently some unrest surfaced in the membership concerning the adopted name for the club.  A proposal to change the name to the Central Area Cruisers was voted on, and stood for a very short period of time.  A discussion ensued, calling for a name that was approved by a majority of the members. In the next iteration, a motion was proffered, changing the name to Pierre Street Machines.  Voted upon, and tossed.  Up next, Pierre Auto Club, voted, approved, then amended to Pierre Area Auto Club. This stood for a short time, eventually being tossed as well.   As it stood, the name was officially/unofficially determined to be Pierre Area Cruisers . During the remainder of the meeting, discussion continued. The follwing names were accepted to add to a ballot: Push Rods; Bent Axles; River Cities Rods and Machines; Street Masters; Dakota Rods and Machines; Road Rebels, and Dam Rodders.  It was noted that the club could not legally transact business without a name. The deciding(?) vote would be taken at the next meeting.  A 2/3 majority vote, on April 11, 1988, established the club's name as Street Masters.  Articles of Incorporation were filed with the State of South Dakota shortly after the April meeting.

This showed up on Facebook awhile back.  It pretty much says it all...

Some of you may remember Brent & Bev. They have an early 30's Chevy sedan, metallic maroon in color with a tuned port 350. Brent and Bev made the trip up for our fall campout a couple of times as well as the Christmas party. They have been instrumental in getting the car club in Winner started.
